Unforgettable hangouts of those red-letter days….

Recollecting all of those places in my college, where we used to share friendship, spud love, spoil pastimes, broach ideas, watch grapplings and all…. Some unforgettable places at NSS College Pandalam….
  • The golden shower tree…. near the first set of steps to the college premises…. She was a peach during her season…. The first look; the first identity of the college…. A memory, quondam lovers would cherish….
  • The assemblage of natural bird nests…. on the ceiling in front of the Principal’s office…. mucks all over the floor drawing an almost circle there…. yet, a ravishing sight on the ceiling…. So many strikes they have seen….
  • The inner courtyard…. where the union and arts club inauguartions were staged…. also entertainment programs…. where we used to hurl paper parings up the air in excitement…. and howl like foxes and bemock in disdain, when deeply commoved….
  • Canteen…. year old donuts plus cool drinks destitute of anything cool…. a common plate and three eaters at one meal’s expense…. *sigh*
  • Labs…. redolent with chemicals, wires, wood, meters and dark…. A different world altogether…. Remember how to resonate a sonometer, how to get golden yellow spangles or how to dissect a poor cockroach? Phytologists, go and search for some eclipta alba…!
  • The auditorium…. venue for college events, meetings, seminars, association inaugurations and poetic renditions…. Masculine poetic voices of Kadammanitta sir and Girish Puliyoor still tarrying in the ears…. Shh, a seminar on Rain Water Harvesting is going on…. Do not disturb….
  • Classrooms…. in close proximity with allergic chalk dust…. the duster that served the purpose of a throw ball more often than it helped pass over the blackboard…. derelict desks and benches giving forth rhythmic creakings…. copy-paste exercises for assignments, test papers and practical logs…. The teacher spews out a question; and I turn behind to see who the target is; a hefty sound echoes: “No, you yourself Sreejith, answer it”. “No, it can’t be me”…. Doomed! 😦
  • Libraries and reading halls…. Places visited when nothing better was on the cards…. Reading Sportstar and The Week rather than going balmy after Pablo Neruda and Lev Tolstoy…. Life wasn’t any serious then…. even now…!
  • College ground… a big one… boundaries, goals, sprints…. at more ease than in classrooms…. we are all masters of the subject; so why attend the boring lectures?…. come we shall split into two teams for a round of cricket…. used to blame the ‘imaginary’ groundsman when he found easy ways to cut the grass and maintain it – set aflame the ground….
  • Yet, everything looked sinister when the exams came thudding the doors ajar….
Oops! I was lost in this talk with you…. It’s four O’ clock, come on, grab your bags and sally out….

You can call it nostalgia, if you could reminisce instances like these from your experience…. My college was a beauty…. a sybaritic beauty…. Don’t know whether all these are preserved there, and thence everything in past tense….

  1. Very Intense Nostalgia indeed..!
It was so infectious that I ended up thinking about my own college too. All colleges have these hangouts where nothing is really done but still serve as the very landmarks of a glorious college life..
A great post.. So nice to know about all your experiences through this one..
Have Fun, and Take Care Sreejith.. Happy Weekend to you.

    With Best Regards,

We all got the same college life wherever we experienced it. Surely, nothing extraordinary was done anywhere, but still those remain as certain milestones…. It’s my pleasure now, to wish you a happy weekend Srijith….

Your post took me back to my
school and college days. I remeber having fun running around the play ground and having lunch under the trees where we talk and talk… Those days always memorable:-)))

Wah… lunch under the trees and talk, talk and talk…. I also enjoyed it, but in college, but not under trees…. A violent mob surronding the three or four innocent people who bring lunch from home regularly…! I belonged to those three or four innocent people…! Charity begins at college!

  22. Sreejith, thanks for sharing such a beatiful account of nostalgia that you experience of your college. I do that same! I loved the way you described each part of your college, and especially liked the nature elements (birds and the tree) – I simply love nature.

My college, though, was on a brand new campus, so the trees had not yet grown, and the birds had not yet settled. Though I did enjoy a lot of my neighborhood in my childhood days, especially in Nainital. It was an unforgettable experience with all the friends and trees and greenery and fun and whatnot.

Hats off to your post. I wished it was a tag that others could take up πŸ™‚

It is so pleasing to hear that this movie evoked the same feeling in many. We all needed such one, didn’t we?

In fact, there is scope for nostalgia there too Gaurav… You can go back to your college years later and find grown-up trees and plenty of birds….

Thanks a lot mate! Oh yes; you can take it as a tag and have some fun filled nostalgia!! πŸ™‚
