‘Nammal Thammil’ ebbing down?

It gives the impression that one of the most prestigious and in demand talk shows on the Malayalam mini screen ‘Nammal Thammil’ on Asianet is ebbing down. It used to intromit topics of widespread interest until now. The show in general used to be very agile and zippy and the commanding performance and treatment of the show by Sreekantan Nair invited the appreciation of one and all. All went pretty well until the show based on the theme “Marital Issues: In Films and Life” aired for the first time two weeks back and then the second and concluding part on last Sunday. It was nothing more than a promotion of the recently released Malayalam film “Madhuchandralekha”. The director of the movie Rajasenan, producer Samad Mankada, hero Jayaram and heroine Urvasi all took part in the show. In addition to these celebrities, there were two couples to talk about the life part specially. It was absolutely gonzo watching the programme as it kept emanating the scenes from this movie rather than talking about actual life and the issues involved in it. The show didn’t give any importance to the couples present there. All the honours went to the celebrities and Sreekantan Nair continued to inflict suspense in the minds of the viewers by giving inconclusive hints about the theme of the movie. The show broadcast the hit song from the movie also, which apparently had nothing to do with the subject of the show.

In general, one gets the impression that the show was contrived only to push the movie. There had been many such endeavors and talk shows saying that film ‘X’ has become a hit, even before release! I remember watching such shows based on “Kilichundan Maampazham” and “Alice in Wonderland”. And where went those movies? It is just like TV channels showing biggest flops enunciating that the mega hit blockbuster movie ‘X’ has its world premier on the specified date! Too poor…. and now this show too.

  1. The same thing happened with udhayananu thaaram with ‘Students Only’ in kairali. I think its not wrong to promote good films in these shows as long as they dont make it the routine way

  2. Re: EswarStudents’ only on Kairali is just a way to promote new releases! The show is purely based on films for a long time now. But the set-up of Nammal Thammil was totally different. Such topics are good. But the show deviated from the topic and concentrated only on the promotion of the movie! Thanks for your visit. Hope to see you again.Re: LeonMallu serial? Oh…. In fact, I cannot touch the remote control of my TV set from 7 to 10.30 PM from Mon-Fri! I think this is the case with most families. LOLThanks for the compliment. Do visit again please.

  3. This is just an example of Asianet’s way of making money by promotion of the movie..plus attracting the audience. This is not actually shocking coz, another such program is “sarigama”hosted by M G Sreekumar..all guests on the show are celebrities and their families..and their stories…but earlier this program had common people as the guests and they had to really compete to win.The shocking part is they get all their answers right!!!even though they have no much knowledge of the music industry…What a “show” pity…Similarly “Swarnamazha” a gold shower show in “surya tv” also had jayaram and family as one team and rajasenan and family as the second team, and ofcourse Urvashi the host…it was a madhuchandralekha family gettogether!!!But one fact is these channels can’t survive without sponsors in the form of movies or other ads!Thats the reality.

  4. Re: PriyaWelcome onboard! Yes, you are right, <>this<> has now become a very common aspect with all the TV channels. But I targeted ‘Nammal Thammil’ because all the other programs you mentioned are designed purely to meet the entertainment aspect, whereas ‘Nammal Thammil’ is not. It is branded as more of a <>sensible<> talk show. The behind-the-scenes activities of ‘SaReGaMa’ is known to all by now. Even pretty young actresses who speak only ‘kurachu kurachu malayalam’ know very well about the malayalam songs. lyricists and music directors of the 1960s and ’70s. Who are they trying to befool!

  6. Re: JijuAccepted; but it kills programs. Whenever people get a deadening feeling from such promos, they start looking for alternatives. This would mark the decline of such shows. TV channels need not be run for charity, but the content of the programs should not be mere promos. If this trend is to continue, in the long run, such programs would have to suffer the fate of dodos. 🙂 Thnaks for your comments!

  7. so true. Its bugging to say the least every channel worth its name like hell bent on promoting movies. The last weekend i went home, promo shows on vadakkunathan were being aired on 3 channels simultaneously. Granted some are movie shows as such..but why is the nammal thammil genre moving into that space? And give us a break, how many times do we need to hear the same *titbits* on the shooting and how somebody got a fever or sneezed during a shoot!!

  8. <>Re: Lakshmi<>Right you are. The Vadakkumnathan shows now seem to pop out of the television sets now, same was/is the case with Rasathanthram. The Nammal Thammil kinda shows are not intended for such promotions we think. But Asianet deviates from this thinking, which is so sad. It will only help to bring down its strength, becoming just an entertainment show.
